Senior Cameron Guertin pitched a one-hitter Tuesday night to lead Pender to a 1-0 Four County Conference victory over visiting East Bladen.

Eagle senior Matthew Massengill spoiled Guertin’s no-hit bid by raking a single through the short-third hole in the sixth inning. East Bladen advanced runners to second and third base in the inning after two were out, but Guertin worked out of the jam.

Junior Alex Coates pitched a 3-hit complete game and struck out four for East Bladen, but the Patriots bunched two of the hits in the same inning to score the run.

Eagle Coach Russell Priest was proud of his team’s defensive effort. “Our defense was solid. We made the plays in the field,” he said. “Their guy (Guertin) was tough. He threw it 83-84 (mph) and was around the plate.”

East Bladen, now 1-2 in the league and 3-5 overall, will host Heide Trask Friday.
