Ryan HarrelsonWhile studying various introductory soil science topics such as general soil composition/type, erosion, agriculture, overgrazing, and land use, Mrs. Shanna Harrelson’s West Bladen High School’s Honors Earth/Environmental Sciences classes welcomed Mr. Ryan Harrelson, Bladen County Extension Director (with NC State University and NC A & T University) to their classroom.

Mr. Harrelson, originally from Bladen County and raised on a farm, has a unique background which assists him in helping farmers in our area. After college (at UNCP, where he received a BS in Plant Physiology and at NCSU, where he received a MS in Soil Science), he returned to the area as an Extension Agent (Field Crops) and then as the Extension Director.  His visit included students actually seeing and working with soil profiles taken from Bladen County.

The students (and teacher) appreciated the time Mr. Harrelson spent at WBHS. When students know people in their community take an interest in their education, everyone wins.
