1843 – An alligator falls from sky during a thunderstorm in Charleston, South Carolina.

1881 – US President James Garfield shot by Charles J. Guiteau a disappointed office-seeker; Garfield dies 79 days later.

1926 – US Army Air Corps created; Distinguished Flying Cross authorized, to award “heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight”

1932 – American Golfer Walter Hagan wins his 5th and last Western Open in Cleveland, 16 years after he won his first.

1937 – Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan disappear flying over the Pacific Ocean en route to Howland Island. Noonan declared the following year, and Earhart is declared the year after (1939)

1941 – Joe DiMaggio hits a 3-run homer off Boston’s Dick Newsome to pass Willie Keeler’s MLB record 44 game hitting streak.

1951 – Bill Veeck buys St Louis Browns from Bill & Charlie DeWitt; after 1953 season sells franchise to Clarence Miles, team moves to Baltimore (Orioles)

1956 – Elvis Presley records “Hound Dog” and “Don’t Be Cruel”

1962 – Sam Walton opens his first Walmart store in Rogers, Arkansas.

1964 – US President Lyndon B. Johnson signs Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act into law.

1979 – Susan B. Anthony dollar is issued, 1st US coin to honor a woman.
