A man was shot and killed by law enforcement officers Tuesday night after he pointed a gun at officers in a wooded area off N.C. 41 near Dublin, according to Bladen County Sheriff Jim McVicker.

McVicker said the shooting took place about 7 p.m. No officers were injured. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released pending notification of family.

The incident began when Bladen County Sheriff’s officers and a Bladenboro Police Department officer were sent to an area after reports of a man with a gun lying in a ditch, McVicker said. Upon arriving on scene, officers were told the man had left in a vehicle.

When officers stopped the vehicle on N.C. 41 about a half mile from the intersection with N.C. 410, the suspect jumped out and ran into nearby woods, according to McVicker. Officers gave chase and, said McVicker, when the man pointed his gun at the officers, the officers opened fire.

The incident took place less than a mile from West Bladen High School. The school’s baseball and softball teams were playing games against Union High School when the shooting took place. People at the game clearly heard several shots fired within a span of 5 to 10 seconds. A few moments later, sirens could be heard as law enforcement arrived on scene.

N.C. 41 between N.C. 410 and N.C. 131 was blocked off as officers and emergency personnel worked the scene.

McVicker said the State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist in the investigation.
