Declan Owen of Elizabethtown was the man shot and killed by law enforcement officers Tuesday night, according to Bladen County Assistant Medical Examiner Kenneth Clark. Owen was 24 years old. Clark said the body has been sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Raleigh for an autopsy.
The shooting took place about 7 p.m. Tuesday when Owen pointed a gun at officers in a wooded area off N.C. 41 near Dublin, according to Bladen County Sheriff Jim McVicker.
The incident began when Bladen County Sheriff’s officers and a Bladenboro Police Department officer were sent to an area after reports of a man with a gun lying in a ditch, McVicker said. Upon arriving on scene, officers were told the man had left in a vehicle.
When officers stopped the vehicle on N.C. 41 about a half mile from the intersection with N.C. 410, the suspect jumped out and ran into nearby woods, according to McVicker. Officers gave chase and, said McVicker, when the man pointed his gun at the officers, the officers opened fire.
McVicker said the State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist in the investigation.
