One person died and two others were critically injured Thursday afternoon when the vehicle they were traveling in ran a stop sign and crashed into a tractor-trailer near Chadbourn in Columbus County, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol and published reports.

The wreck happened about 1:30 p.m. on N.C. 410, according to reports.

The identities of those involved had not been released.

State troopers reported the vehicle was traveling east on U.S. 74, then exited on to N.C. 410 without stopping at the stop sign. The car crashed with a fuel tanker, according to reports.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured, reports say.

A passenger in the car died at the scene while the driver and a toddler who was in the backseat were taken to the hospital in Whiteville, according to reports.
