27th annual MLK parade Monday in Elizabethtown

More than 75 entries, including, perhaps, more than 500 motorcycles, are expected to participate in Monday’s parade in Elizabethtown that honors the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The parade is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

It will be the 27th year that Elizabethtown has held a parade in honor of the slain civil rights leader, who was born Jan. 15, 1929 in Atlanta. The federal holiday is observed on the third Monday of January each year.

“Basically, we’re just trying to bring the community together,” said Arthur Bullock, who is helping to organize the parade. “We want to stress being together. Back in the day, everything was segregated. (Dr. King) always stressed to treat everyone the same. Don’t worry about the color of their skin. It’s the content of their character. So, we’re honoring him on his birthday. We’re just trying to bring the community together.”

The parade route has entries going through downtown on Broad Street before turning right onto Poplar Street at the intersection of N.C. 87 Business and U.S. 701, before ending in the parking lot of Bo’s Food Store. Lineup will begin at 9 a.m. at Elizabethtown Town Hall.

After the parade, a community meal will be served at Big Show Auto Finish at 2900 West Broad Street and at Cape Fear Masonic Lodge 300 at 702 Martin Luther King Drive.
