Now that spring weather has arrived, a popular lifestyle magazine that celebrates places, culture and more of the Southern United States is focusing on the region’s best beach towns. Southern Living readers ranked the “50 Best Beach Towns in the South 2025” and three made the list from the Wilmington area: Wrightsville Beach, Topsail Beach and Oak Island.
Wrightsville Beach and Topsail Beach were recently recognized in Southern Living as some of the most beautiful places on the North Carolina coast.

Wrightsville Beach

People enjoy a beach day at Wrightsville Beach.

Wrightsville Beach made the list at number 28.

“This quaint village has upscale stores and restaurants (many on the water),” beautifully preserved historic homes, and a stunning coastline that’s popular for surfing, writes Southern Living writes. More than 40 public access points make it simple to get out onto the water, or you can enjoy your surroundings on the John Nesbitt Loop, roughly over 2 miles of a paved walking trail. After a long day, head to Kohl’s Frozen Custard for a sweet treat.

Topsail Beach

Topsail Beach was named among the best beach towns in the South for 2025 by Southern Living.

At number 46 is Topsail Beach.

Along with Surf City and North Topsail Beach, this retreat is one of three towns that make up the 26-mile-long Topsail Island, writes Southern Living. With around 500 full-time residents, unspoiled shores, and no high-rises in sight, peace is easy to come by. Every time of year is special here, but summer, when loggerhead sea turtles come ashore to nest and lay their eggs, is truly amazing.

Oak Island

Oak Island made the list of the South's 50 best beach towns according to Southern Living at No. 50.

Feeling the breeze in your hair is only one golf cart rental away on this low-key barrier island, which is ranked 50th by Southern Living readers.

Oak Island’s south-facing shores offer prime views of the sun rising and setting. And don’t miss the two fishing piers, North Carolina’s newest active lighthouse, and some of the finest shelling in the state.
