Three Things to KnowThree things to know for Saturday, August 13

1. The 18th annual Made in the Shade Open Car and Truck Show is on tap today on the lawn in front of San Jose Restaurant in Elizabethtown. Registration is from 8 a.m. until noon and judging will begin at about 10 a.m. or as soon as each row gets full, said Wayne Dove, of Classic Cruisers Car Club. Dove said the club is expecting about 300 entries. A portion of the proceeds raised go to benefit several charities in Bladen County.

2. Did you read where a doctor in Florida is returning an overdue library book that he checked out as a child in the mid-190s from the Kanawha County Library in West Virginia? Dr. Michael Kelly told WCHS-TV that he recently found the book on a bookshelf in his home in Miami. He donated $500 to the library when returning the book, according to the station’s report. The title of the book was … are you ready for this? … “So You Want To Be a Doctor.”

3. With the Summer Olympics in full swing, it’s worth noting that the first North Carolinian to compete in the games was Harry Williamson from High Point. He attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Williamson finished sixth in the 800-meter run in the 1936 Games in Berlin, Germany. That’s the Olympics that saw Jesse Owens win four gold medals (100-meter dash, long jump, 200-meter dash and 4×100-meter relay), much to the disgust of Germany’s Adolph Hitler.

And now you know.
