Three Things to KnowThree things to know for Tuesday, July 12

1. Nine new members were sworn in Monday morning in Bladen County Superior Court to serve one-year terms on the grand jury. The group replaced nine whose term had expired. Nine other jurors still have six months remaining on their term. The panel meets once a month to determine if there’s enough evidence presented by the state to serve criminal indictments and begin legal proceedings. The panel doesn’t determine whether someone is guilty or not guilty. Jurors are sworn to secrecy forever, so, if you know someone serving on the grand jury, doesn’t ask about their meetings.

2. Only 5 days until the fifth annual Desmond Bryant Football Camp at East Bladen High School. The camp is Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. It’s free and for ages six through 18. Bryant, who now plays for the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, will help with instruction. Registration will be accepted on the day of the camp beginning at 8 a.m., or preregistration applications are available at several places throughout the community. For information, call (910) 872-4470.

3. Can you name the 16 fire departments in Bladen County? Ammon, Bay Tree, Bladenboro, Carvers Creek, Clarkton, Dublin, East Arcadia, Elizabethtown, Hickory Grove, Kelly, Lisbon, Rowan, Tar Heel, Tobermory, White Lake and White Oak. Personnel and volunteers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Each deserve the support of their communities.

And now you know.
