4 year old White Oak child drowns at White Lake

What began as a family outing for a White Oak family ended in tragedy Monday shortly after noon when a 4 year old child playing with older siblings drowned at White Lake.

Sgt. Mike Salmon of the White Lake Police Department said the call was received at 12:33 and two minutes later the White Lake Police and Fire Department were on the scene.
According to Salmon, a mother had taken her 5 children to play in the water.  Two older siblings in the water were joined by the 4 year old.  The mother was on the shore with two other siblings and according to her, she had seen them playing just minutes before she heard screaming and saw someone place a child on the pier. Salmon said a young lady was swimming in the area and saw a child face down in the water, not moving.  She checked on him and he was unresponsive.  The lady placed the child on the pier and began CPR until emergency personnel arrived on the scene.
The child was transported to Bladen County Hospital.
Sgt. Salmon said the investigation is ongoing and he will release names Tuesday morning.
