Each year since 1954, the week of May 6 through May 12 is National Nurses’ Week. The American Nurses Association (ANA) explains the week honors the men and women around the country who have dedicated their lives to caring for those who are at their most vulnerable and in need.

During the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak, now may be more important than ever to show appreciation to nurses. The ANA stated, “Globally, the nursing profession is celebrating a milestone in 2020, as the World Health Organization declares it the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife in honor of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale.”

Bladen County citizens and business owners have already taken steps to show their appreciation for nurses. Some local residents have made masks, some business owners have donated food, and others in the community post their words of gratitude on social media.

Yesterday, Cape Fear Valley stated, “We are always proud of our nursing staff, but especially now as they are the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

If you have not celebrated a nurse yet, there is still time. The celebrations conclude on Florence Nightingales’ birthday, May 12.

The following are five ways you may celebrate the special nurse(s) in your life.

  1. Send a thank you card.
  2. Send flowers.
  3. Call, text,or post words of encouragement.
  4. Offer to babysit, or pet sit.
  5. Give a gift certificate or gift card.
