
Lalia Smith won the 300-meter hurdles Saturday as six East Bladen individuals and five relay teams qualified for the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A state championship meet.
The 1A state meet is scheduled Friday at Marcus T. Johnson Track on the campus of N.C. A&T University in Greensboro. The top four finishes in each regional event qualfied for the state championship.
Smith easily won her 300-meter hurdles race at the 1A Mideast Regional at Pender High School in Burgaw with a time of 50.26 seconds, which was nearly three seconds better than runner-up Kylie Etheridge of Wake Prep Academy at 53.25. Smith also qualified in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing second in 17.37 seconds. North Duplin’s TaTeyawna Faison won in 16.94 seconds.
The East Bladen boys’ 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams won their races and the 4×400 team placed third.
The Eagles’ Chace Butler qualifed in two sprint events. He finished third in the 100 meters in 11.16 seconds and third in the 200 meters in 23.34. Teven McLean placed second in the 200 meters in 22.98 seconds.
Jayden Hawkins also qualified for finals in two events. He finished second in the 110-meter hurdles in 18.27 seconds, behind North Duplin’s Marcus Hill (15.67) and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles in 44.16.
Cabria Baldwin finished third in the shot put with a personal-best heave of 29 feet, 8.5 inches. Dashon Campbell placed third in discus with a toss of 115 feet.
The East Bladen girls’ 4×200-meter and 4×100-meter relay teams also advanced to the state meet. The 4×200 team of Nyasia Banks, Arien Fields, Trinity Kemp and Montierra Richardson finished second in 1:54.21. The 4×100 team of Banks, Kemp, Richardson and Smith finished third in 53.64.
