Boost the Boro, a local non-profit in Bladenboro met this past Tuesday, July 11th to discuss planning, property, and making improvements to the town. Don White, President of the group lead the discussions of the many different topics.

The Town of Bladenboro along with Boost the Boro and the North Carolina Department of Commerce are working together for a five year strategic plan for the town’s economic development growth according to White. John O’Daniel, Town Administrator for Bladenboro announced an Economic Development Strategic Planning meeting for for the town of Bladenboro.

The strategic planning meeting will be held at the Bladenboro Community Building at 7 p.m. on July 27th. White encouraged everyone to attend the important meeting and asked everyone to help spread the word.

Penny Walters was applauded for her excellent work with the Spring Fling held in June. According to White the annual event raised more money for the non-profit than it did last year.

Walters said she did want to change the date for next year’s Spring Fling. Talks of the festivities lead into discussions about the annual Beast Fest.

This year the Beat Fest will be held on October 27th and 28th. The local band, Black Water Rhythm and Blues will play Friday night and the Fantastic Shakers will play Saturday. Charles Ray Peterson is the Chair person for the festival and was helping divide up the duties. For more information or to register as a vendor, visit: boosttheboro.org.

At the May 9th, 2017 meeting the subject was brought up about the non-profit purchasing a building going into foreclosure. Peterson brought up the topic again stating the group needed to make a decision about the situation.

According to Peterson, a building in at the corner of Martin Luther King Drive in Bladenboro is facing foreclosure and the property owner offered the building to Boost the Boro, Inc. for the back taxes owed.

After some of the board members took a look a the building the vote was made to purchase the building for the taxes owed.

Before leaving, Ms. Joyce Walters announced the Bladenboro Historical Society Building will hold a centennial celebration on September 9th and invited all to attend.

The group decided to meet this coming Saturday, July 15th, 2017 at the Farmer’s Market for a clean up day until around 12 noon.
