Thoughts While ShavingEast Bladen girls basketball team will be on the road playing Richland girls today.  Gametime is 6 PM game as the NCHSAA playoffs continue.  Tonight’s winner will play the winner of the Kinston-South Granville game for the Eastern Championship.  The Eastern Champ advances to the state championship game.  The 4 finalist in the West are, in no order, Mountain Heritage of Burnsville,  Madison, Wilkes Central and East Burke. John Clark’s article on our Sports Page provides all you need to know about tonight’s game.

Just three days remaining for anyone interested in adding their name to the list of candidates in the upcoming May Primary election.  One more name added Friday,  William D. Whitley of Tar Heel filed for the District 3 County Commissioner.  Whitley will oppose incumbent Russell Priest of E-town, who is seeking re-election.  Filing ends February 28th.  Call or visit the Bladen County Board of Elections for details.  Either most must be happy with current line-up, or no one cares.  Not sure.

In 1974 and ’78, over 10 candidates were seeking 3 seats for County Commissioner.  Different arrangement, there were no districts, everyone ran at-large and there were only 5 each on the Board of Commissioners and Board of Education.

5 members may have been to few, but 9 is too many.  (My personal thought)  Would take an act of Congress to change, I suppose.  A county of 35,000 with 9 members, same as Mecklenburg (Charlotte).  Wake County (Raleigh) has 7, both with about a million residents.  No current commissioners were on the board when the decision to expand was made.

This February weather is nice, trees are bloomin’, lawns are turning green.  One frost will slow the process, and chances are good cold weather is not over for winter 2018.

One more reminder of the Bladen County Hospital gala tonight.  “A Night at the Oscar’s” begins at 6 PM today at Lu Mil.  Tickets are $50 each and are a must for attendees.

Difficult for me to think that our schools and churches are not safe havens from troubled individuals seeking to do harm.  I really don’t know or care what’s to blame, just fix the problem, if it is fixable.

Remember the Burma Shave signs along our main roadways?  Young folks have no idea, the signs were gone by the mid 50s I suppose.

Don’t lose your head to gain a minute, you need your head your brains are in it.  Burma Shave
