WHITEVILLE – Whiteville defeated East Bladen 7-1 Wednesday night in the Three Rivers Conference baseball opener for both teams.

The Eagles jumped ahead with a first-inning run. Senior Sincere Smith reached on a passed third strike. After junior  Greyson Heustess lined a single to centerfield, senior Xavier Wooten belted a run-scoring single that scored Smith.

The Wolfpack answered with two runs in the home half of the inning as Dylan Hinson walked and Jake Harwood and Lincoln Ransom cracked singles.

Whiteville broke the game open with a 4-run sixth-inning rally. Harwood and Ransom both batted 2-3 to lead the Wolfpack offense. Pitcher Brooks Baldwin hammered a triple during the sixth-inning rally.

Heustess batted 2-3 to lead the Eagle hitters. Smith, Wooten, and juniors Pierce Melvin and Shy Pone connected for one hit each.

Senior lefthander Ty Watkins pitched the first 4.1 innings for the Eagles and struck out 3 batters. Wooten worked the final 1.2 innings on the mound for East and also struck out 3 batters.

The Eagles will host South Columbus Friday night.
