Mezzo-soprano Kathryn Findlen and pianist Charlie Magnone returned to Bladen County Friday, stopping first to visit students at Clarkton School of Discovery, and then presenting a program of vocal and piano works from the American Songbook at Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church. The concert was orchestrated by a collaborative effort from Bladen Community College, Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church, and the Arts Council of Bladen County.

Mrs. Linda Burney, Bladen Community College Foundation Director made the introductions of Findlen and Magnone, “It is my distinct pleasure to welcome again, for the second year, Ms. Kathryn Findlen and Charlie Magnone.” Findlen and Magnone gave a powerful, emotional performance leaving the audience in complete awe.

The program selections were from Jerome Kern to Stephen Sondheim in addition to piano classics by Bach, Beethoven, and Lowe. The award winning performers also helped educate the audience on the history of the music. The program was a true gift to all in attendance.

Fidlen having roots in Bladen County said, “Some of you may have known my aunt, Magdalene Parker who taught at Elizabethtown High School. She was a great mentor to my mother, Dorthy, who taught at Tar Heel High School.” Fidlen’s family has been giving back to Bladen County for many years. Now residents of Bladen County have the honor to have Fidlen share her talents along with Magnone’s talents with our community as well.  “I’m delighted to be here tonight and partnered by Charlie.” Fidlen said.

The program ended with a surprise by Miss Madison Cain and Miss Autumn Brisson, students from Clarkton School of Discovery, joining the performance of Leonard Bernstein’s “Dream With Me” with Findlen and Magnone.

When referring to the artists’ visit to Clarkton School of Discovery and the students’ performance, Burney said, “This is a once and lifetime opportunity.  The arts are extremely important in a child’s education. Clarkton School of Discovery does a great job educating the whole child.” The collaborative organizing the school’s visit and the concert brought a remarkable treasure to Bladen County. Chairman of Bladen Community College Board of Trustees, Mr. Dennis Tory, reminded everyone, “We bring students hope, opportunities, and we bring them jobs. It takes a whole community to raise a kid and it takes a whole community to support our community college. Please support Bladen Community College.”
