CLARKTON – Lafon Monroe knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning to cap a 4-run Clarkton School of Discovery rally that lifted the Blue Devils to an 8-7 Bladen Five Middle School Conference victory Thursday over Tar Heel.

The Panthers carried a 7-4 lead into the home fifth, but Samaj Dove hammered a one-out triple, and Nyquan Richardson smashed a double that scored Dove. Davion Graham walloped a triple that drove in Richardson.

Richardson scored as Jake Futrell reached base on an error. Pitcher Lee Barnes belted a single, and Monroe drove in Futrell with a single that put the Blue Devils ahead 8-7.

The game was stopped by the time limit at the end of the fifth inning.

The Blue Devils jumped in front with a first inning run. Graham and Nazire Smith smacked singles, Futrell walked and Barnes’ fielder’s choice scored Graham.

Tar Heel tied the game 1-1 in the second. Tucker Carroll and Jordan Underwood drew walks, and Riley Stanley drove in Carroll with a single.

The Panther grabbed a 4-1 lead with a 3-run third inning. Alex Brisson, Destin Montgomery and Antonio Candelaria drew walks, and Jordan Bryan’s fielder’s choice scored Brisson.

Jordan Underwood drilled a single that scored Montgomery and Candelaria. Underwood was injured on the play and had to leave the game.

Clarkton pulled even at 4-4 with 3 runs in the fourth. Richardson started the rally with a single, and Graham reached base on an error. Smith’s fielder’s choice scored Richardson. Futrell laced a single that scored Graham, and Lafon Monroe’s single plated Futrell with the tying run.

The Panthers reclaimed the lead with a 3-run fifth inning. Brisson reached base on an error, and Montgomery and Candelaria drew walks. Jordan Bryan slapped a single that scored Brisson and Montgomery. Candelaria also scored to push the lead to 7-4.

Barnes batted 2-3 with a run batted in to lead the Clarkton hitters. Lafon Monroe finished 2-3 at the plate with 2 runs batted in. Graham batted 2-4 with a triple, an rbi and 3 runs scored.

Richardson also finished 2-4 at the plate with a double, an rbi and 2 runs scored. Dove tripled and scored a run. Futrell and Smith contributed one hit each and drove in one run each. Futrell scored 2 runs.

Bryan, Underwood and Stanley connected for one hit each to lead the Panther hitters. Bryan drove in 3 runs, and Underwood drove in 2 runs. Stanley had one rbi. Brisson, Montgomery and Candelaria scored 2 runs each, and Carroll scored one.

Barnes pitched a 3-hitter and struck out five to pick up the win for Clarkton, but was plagued by 10 walks. Stanley gave up 11 hits, but struck out six and walked five for Tar Heel.

It was the Blue Devils first win of the season, while Tar Heel dropped to 2-2 in league play.
