FAYETTEVILLE – Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation has received a $1,385 grant to help pay for art therapy classes and supplies for cancer patients and their families.
The money comes through the Cumberland Community Foundation’s Karen Parker Allen Memorial Endowment. The grant will help pay for Artful Reflections art classes for entire families who have a loved one receiving treatment at Cape Fear Valley Cancer Treatment & CyberKnife Center.
The funding will also help buy kits and art supplies for Cancer Center social workers to give to children or grandchildren of cancer patients. The kits include a sketch pad and a book, Kids Alive, with encouraging message from other children who have had a parent who went through cancer treatment.
Sabrina Brooks, Health Foundation Director, says the foundation is grateful to Karen Parker’s family and Cumberland Community Foundation for their desire to support events and activities for children of cancer patients.
“We’ve seen a lot of success with our Artful Reflections program with cancer patients,” Brooks said. “So, it was a natural fit for us to offer a creative outlet for children dealing with the emotional side of their parent’s diagnosis.”
