The North Carolina Attorney General’s Office is warning residents to beware of fake letters from deployed service member. These letters are a new scam that target your bank account.
The way the scam works, is the victim receives a letter that seems to be signed by a high-ranking military official at Fort Bragg. The letters instruct the victims to go to a website and set up an account and choose a payment plan. The letters instruct the victim to a payment plan that will allow them to stay in touch with their loved one, friend or neighbor who is deployed.
NC Attorney General Josh Stein warns residents to never give out their personal information such as social security numbers or bank account information to anyone.
“If you do need to find out how to contact a loved one while they are deployed, contact your Family Readiness Liaison or chain of command,” said Stein.
