The Bladen County Hospital Foundation Gala was well attended on Saturday evening. The elegant event was held at Lu Mil Vineyard and a program of jazz music was performed by Jane Clark and Tom Noonan during the meal.
Bladen County Hospital Public Relations Director Ashley Dowless recognized four employees, Terri Duncan, Sylvia Thompson and Brenda McLamb for 30 years or more of service to the hospital. Also recognized was Dr. Pearly Graham Hoskins for her many years of service. Dr. Hoskins was unable to attend the event.
Dowless also recognized four employees from the hospital’s former maternity ward. Recognized were Patricia Smith, Nathalie Gore, Misty Gordon and Marsha Williamson. Dowless said they have been given other assignments in the hospital system.
Cape Fear Valley-Bladen Healthcare President Dr. Roxie Wells addressed the audience in attendance.
“As you know, we experienced some damage to our building from Hurricane Florence and our entire county has come together to work with us to repair the area (damaged),” said Dr. Wells.
As a result of the damage to the building, the decision was made to close the maternity ward. Those nurses were assigned to other areas.

Robert Annas, Chief Operating Officer of Eagle Telemedicine for Hospitals, also spoke. He explained that Eagle Telemedicine is working with Cape Fear Valley-Bladen Healthcare. He explained that Eagle Telemedicine is helping hospitals to change in-patient health care for the better.
Brian Campbell made points about the hospital as he spoke at the event. He said, “in today’s world, we are all taught the word independent. It’s a word I think everyone kind of aspires to. You want to be self sufficient.”
He also noted that another word should be utilized—interdependent. Campbell noted that the work being done at the hospital will allow it to be better connected to other locations.
Five Star Entertainment warmed things up on the dance floor playing a variety of beach music, soul and Top 40 favorites.
During the event a raffle was held and prizes included a diamond earrings and necklace set provided by Bob’s Jewel Shop of Lumberton, Airpods, and a cooler and heater provided by Bladen Builders.
An delicious meal was provided by Giorgio’s Restaurant and Joan Carol Skipper. There also was a red carpet photo booth available.
