CLARKTON – Nakina defeated Clarkton School of Discovery 6-1 Tuesday in Waccamaw Middle School Conference baseball action.

The Blue Devils scored in the third inning. Matthew Kemp reached base on an error, and Nyquan Richardson lined a single to left. Kemp was retired on Lee Barnes’ fielder’s choice, but Jake Futrell ripped a single to centerfield that scored Richardson.

Nakina answered with a triple and two singles in the fourth inning and took a 2-1 lead. A pair of Blue Devil errors led to two more Mustang runs in the fifth, and Nakina added unearned runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Daquan Cox struck out 7 batters in 4 innings of one-hit scoreless relief to secure the victory for the Mustangs. Cox also saved at least one run in the first inning with an outstanding catch in deep centerfield to rob Richardson of an extra-base hit.

Richardson batted 2-3 and scored a run to lead the Clarkton hitters. Futrell, Garrett Dunham and Parker Greene connected for one hit each for the Blue Devils. Futrell drove in a run.

Futrell pitched a complete-game 5-hitter for the Blue Devils. Only one of the Nakina runs was earned. Futrell struck out six and walked two.

Clarkton will travel to Tar Heel Thursday.
