The flag is flying half staff today at the Bladen County Sheriff’s Department in honor of Deputy Sheriff Dewayne Charles Hester who passed away three years ago today in the line of duty.

Deputy Hester’s mother brought roses by the office and they stand on a table along with a candle and a flag under the Wall of Honor of Officers Never Forgotten.
Sheriff Jim McVicker said when speaking about Deputy Hester, “We want the family to know that we have not forgotten. There is not one day that goes by that someone here doesn’t mention his name.”
According to Deputy Sheriff Dwayne Hester’s memorial page, he was killed in a vehicle collision while responding to an assault in-progress call on June 8, 2012. Deputy Hester had served with the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office for one year and had previously served with the Elizabethtown Police Department for four years. He is survived by his wife, two children, his mother and two brothers.

Captain Jeff Bridgers said the flag will be at half staff again in September for Deputy Sheriff Jamie Collins, another local fallen hero.
