Yesterday was about as hot, weatherwise, as we see in this area. At 3:45 p.m., the National Weather Service, Curtis Brown Airport reporting station, reported 100 degrees. The weather stats are recorded every 20 minutes, then every 3 hours. Apparently, the temp reached 101 degrees between reporting times, based on the three-hour report.

Remember years ago when folks fried eggs on asphalt or cement, big deal about how long it took.

Saw folks paving a driveway in our area yesterday … talk about a hot job.

Two headlines from nearby towns. Garland leaders are contemplating eliminating their police department and Roseboro folks found a black bear in a tree.

East Bladen alum had a good two year stay at Brunswick Community College. Kyle Tatum was a leader on the baseball team that enjoyed a great season. Same could be said for other Bladen County graduates that have moved on to the next level. John Clark covers the landscape in our Sports section.

The annual meeting of the Bladen County Committee of 100 is set for Thursday, June 6. Membership is $100 with proceeds used for Economic Development Committee activities. Ernie Pearson, a leader in economic development in North Carolina, will be the guest speaker. For more info contact the EDC office in Elizabethtown.

The 51st SEDC Annual Meeting will be held noontime tomorrow (May 30) at Cape Fear Vineyard & Winery. Kenny Flowers will be the keynote speaker. He is assistant secretary for Rural Economic Development, North Carolina Department of Commerce. Southeastern Economic Development Commission (SEDC) headquarters are located in Elizabethtown. They serve numerous, mostly southeastern, North Carolina counties.
