Temps dropped from mid 90s to mid 70s over the past week or so. Can’t wait to hear complaints about cold weather. …. Actually, could be a few weeks, the possibilities of more 90s, pretty good.
The author of ‘The Devil in Pew Number Seven,’ Rebecca N. Alonzo, made at least three appearances at churches in the area over the weekend. I was privileged to hear her speak at Wesley’s Chapel UMC near Elizabethtown. If you aren’t familiar with the book, published several years ago, a Columbus County businessman and politician was accused and later found guilty of causing problems in one of the churches in Sellers Town near Whiteville. Ms. Alonzo’s mom was killed, dad was seriously injured as she and her brother looked on. That was in the mid to late ’70s.
How about the PGA Championship played over the past few days in Atlanta? Rory Mcllory emerged as the winner of a cool $15 million. Actually, the top half dozen or more players won over a million dollars each in the season finale.
Think I should have been concentrating on golf when I was cropping tobacco, bagging groceries and cutting out dresses that retailed for $3.98 each.
Dublin Peanut Festival will be held September 21 and Clarkton Farm Fest the following weekend (Sept. 28).
The last Clarkton Tobacco festival was held in 1997, after 50 years. Remember when the Tobacco Festival was held in Elizabethtown? Think it may have been held a time or two in Bladenboro, not sure about the ‘boro. Clarkton was the home for years, and rightfully so. Only site in the county with tobacco markets (warehouses). That was during the time when tobacco was king.
