East Bladen baseball’s run to the fourth-round of the NCHSAA Class 2A Baseball Play-offs highlighted the sports stories for the second quarter of 2019.

Coach Russell Priest’s Eagles finished second in the Three Rivers Conference, but rolled through the first 3 rounds of the play-offs. Defeating First Flight 12-2. READ MORE

The Eagles were eliminated 5-4 in the fourth round at No. 4 seed Washington and finished their season with a 19-7 record.

Eagle sophomore Lefrederick Wooten and seniors Shy Pone and Spencer Scott were named to the All-Three Rivers Baseball Team. Junior Logan West represented West Bladen on the all-league team. READ MORE

Jay Raynor

Coach Jay Raynor’s East Bladen girls soccer team tied Whiteville for the Three Rivers Conference championship. READ MORE The Lady Eagles advanced to the second round of the Class 2A state play-offs before dropping a 2-1 decision to Wheatmore and finishing the season with a 17-2 record.

Freshman Mya McDonald was named the Three Rivers Conference Co-Player of the Year, and Raynor was selected as the TRC Co-Coach of the Year. Other Lady Eagles on the All-TRC squad were senior Ashley Hardin, junior Sydney Wober and sophomores Katie Evans and Kenia Medina. West Bladen junior Alyssa Smith and sophomore Josefina Taboada were also named All-TRC. READ MORE

In June Mya McDonald and Katie Evans were members of the East team that won the Gold Medal in the North Carolina Powerade State Games. READ MORE

Jon Sherman was named the new head football coach for West Bladen. READ MORE

Aking Elting was selected as the new head basketball coach at East Bladen. READ MORE

East Bladen’s girls 4×400 relay team won the Three Rivers Conference championship. READ MORE

West Bladen’s Tyre Boykin and Tinyauh Rhoda were the top Bladen performers at the Class 2A Track & Field MidEast Regional. READ MORE

Boykin, Davian Willis-Howard and Andrew A.J. Brown qualified for the state meet. Brown reached the long jump final and finished 13th in the state.

Cade Hancock

Harrells Christian Academy’s Cade Hancock, an Elizabethtown native, finished fourth in the NCISAA Class 2A State Tournament and received All-State honors. Hancock also played a key role in the East team’s victory in the Tar Heel Cup. READ MORE

West Bladen won the final Three Rivers Conference golf match of the regular season. Knights’ Wyatt Bordeaux and Chad Garner were named All-Three Rivers Conference. READ MORE  The Knights behind strong performances from Bordeaux and Garner finished sixth in the regional and just missed qualifying for the Class 2A State Tournament.

Two East Bladen doubles teams and West Bladen’s Jose Osorio qualified for the Class 2A MidEast Regional Tennis Tournament. READ MORE

Osorio and East Bladen’s Jay McGill and Jackson Bostic were named to the All-Three Rivers squad. READ MORE

West Bladen juniors Kyla Reed and Alara Cashwell and East Bladen sophomore Kayleigh Raynor made the All-Three Rivers Conference softball team. READ MORE West Bladen finished fourth in the Three Rivers and received a play-off berth.

Coach Larry Williams’ Elizabethtown Cougars completed an undefeated 12-0 baseball season and captured both the Waccamaw Middle School Conference AAA Division and Bladen County Tournament championships. READ MORE

Clarkton School of Discovery rallied in the last inning to win the Bladen County Softball Tournament 3-2 in 8 innings over Bladenboro. READ MORE

Shy’Asia Ratliff

Clarkton’s Shy’Asia Ratliff was chosen to participate in Major League Baseball’s Trailblazer Series in California. READ MORE

Elizabethtown Middle won the Waccamaw Conference AAA Division softball championship by winning 2 of their 3 games with Whiteville Central.

Elizabethtown won the Dixie Youth Baseball District 9 AAA Tournament and we will hear a lot more about that team in the third quarter review. READ MORE

East Bladen grad Kyle Tatum was one of the leaders for a Brunswick Community College baseball team that finished one win short of a World Series berth. READ MORE
