BLADENBORO – Keshawn Ballard sank 2 free throws, and Anthony Cowan drove for a pair of lay-ups as West Bladen rallied for a 28-22 Three Rivers Conference jayvee boys basketball victory over East Bladen Monday night.

Nazire Smith drove for 2 lay-ups and hit 2 free throws, and Malaki Monroe tossed in a basket to edge the Eagles in front 22-21 with 2:16 left to play.

Ballard’s 2 foul shots lifted the Knights in front 23-22, and Cowan raced for lay-ups after a steal and a long rebound. Teammate Anthony Mitchell made a free throw for the final margin.

Ballard and Cowan shared scoring honors for the Knights with 9 points each. Teammate Josiah Brown totaled 6 points. Smith led all scorers with 13 points for the Eagles. Teammate Malcolm Bolden finished with 6 points.

A trio of Cowan free throws put West up 3-2 early. Bolden drove for an Eagle basket. Ballard buried a 3-point shot and a free throw in the second period. Brown and Javontae Matthews cashed in 2 free throws each for a 13-8 Knight halftime lead. A pair of Smith baskets and one by Bolden kept the Eagles close.

Brown and Ballard nailed 3-point shots in the third quarter, and Brown hit a free throw for a 20-14 Knight lead. Smith tossed in 2 baskets, and Bolden made 2 free throws for the Eagles.

Coach Jason Hemingway’s Knights improved to 7-8 on the season and will travel to Whiteville Friday. East Bladen visits West Columbus Tuesday night.
