Hundreds of people marched down Skibo Road in Fayetteville on Saturday afternoon as part of a peaceful protest over the death of George Floyd.

Protesters later gathered at the Market House in downtown Fayetteville. Rapper J. Cole and NBA player Dennis Smith Jr., who are both Fayetteville natives, attended the afternoon protest.

Floyd, who was born in Fayetteville, died while in police custody in Minneapolis. A Minneapolis police officer has been charged with murder and manslaughter in Floyd’s death. A video showed the officer kneeling on Floyd’s neck for several minutes and Floyd saying that he could not breathe.

There were reports of at least one store at Cross Creek Mall in Fayetteville being looted. Video from several news organizations showed people running out of JC Penney.
