RALEIGH – Karen Brinson Bell, the executive director of the N.C. State Board of Elections, said Wednesday that Tuesday’s primary elections in Columbus County and the 11th Congressional District “went smoothly under difficult circumstances.”
Bell said more than 47,000 voters cast ballots by either mail, in-person early voting or on election day. It was the state’s first attempt at voting during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In Columbus County, Chris Smith won the Republican primary for the Board of Commissioners District 2 seat. Madison Cawthorn defeated Lynda Bennett in the Republican primary for the U.S. House District 11 seat.
“At the State Board of Elections, we are proud of the efforts of our county boards of elections, directors and staffs in the 18 North Carolina counties with primary elections yesterday,” Bell said.
“As your state elections director, I want to reaffirm our commitment to my fellow North Carolinians that you will be able to cast your ballot without fear of disease,” she said. “Tuesday’s elections made it even more clear that state elections officials must be prepared this November for significant numbers of voters casting ballots using all three voting options.”
