Much of the 2020 monthly special events calendar at Columbus County Community Farmers Market has fallen victim to the Coronavirus pandemic according to President & Board chair Lindy Harold Shuman, a local farmer and vendor at the market.

But, as a result of special COVID-19 safety procedures which encourage social distancing and wearing of face coverings/masks, so far the market has been able to successfully operate on every Saturday of the current season and still protect everyone’s health and safety.

Accordingly, the market Board has announced plans to proceed with the remaining 2020 special events which include Honey Day on Saturday, September 19, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The event will feature local honey, honey and beeswax-based products like lotions, salves, soaps, candles, lip balm, as well as delicious honey-based baked goods and other food products.

The Columbus County Beekeepers Association plans to have a space to promote the local beekeeping and honey industry.  Other honey vendors are encouraged to participate as a vendor at the market.  The cost is $15 per space.

In addition to the honey and honey products, the market expects to have a good variety of locally grown, farm fresh products for sale including figs, okra, peppers, squash, fresh cut flowers, eggs, jams, jellies, pickles, handmade wood crafts and more.

Other upcoming special events on the schedule include Sweet Potato Day on Saturday, October 17; the Farm-to-Table Dinner Fundraiser at The Farm at Union Valley on Thursday, October 22; Collard & Cornbread Day on Saturday, November 14; and the “Christmas from the Heart” Craft Show & Sale on Saturday, December 5.

The Columbus County Farmers Community Market is located at 132 Government Complex Road in Whiteville, North Carolina near the Department of Social Services.  The Farmers Market is open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.  For more information, visit www.columbuscountyfarmersmarket.com or call 910-840-6743.
