The Howlers built a 6-1 lead and held on to defeat the Stars 6-4 Tuesday night in the opening game of Bladen Recreation’s 8-10 girls’ softball league at County Park.

 

Karlee Gause walloped a double and Bristol Allen reached base in the 1st inning. Both of them scored as the Howlers grabbed a 2-0 lead.

 

Chloe Merritt led off the Stars half of the first inning with a single and raced home to trim the margin to 2-1 when Allison Hickman hammered a double.

 

Hayleigh Simmons reached base in the Howlers 2nd inning, and Chloe Walters and Aleigha Alley were both hit by pitches. Simmons and Walters both scored to pad the Howlers lead to 4-1.

 

Pitcher Maycee Kinlaw drilled a solo home run into the rightfield corner in the 3rd inning that boosted the Howlers lead to 5-1.

 

Kamariah Rhodie smacked a single and scored the Howlers final run in the 4th inning as Abigail Dew reached base.

 

Landry Singletary, Hickman and Mollie Sasser all connected for singles in the Stars half of the 4th, and Singletary and Hickman scored runs to whittle the Howler lead to 6-3.

 

Maddie Hall started the Stars’ 5th inning with a single and scored to close the gap to 6-4. Avianna Whittington swatted a single for the Stars, and Hickman finished 2-2 at the plate.

 

Kinlaw struck out 9 batters for the Howlers and Hickman struck out 7 batters for the Stars.
