In a social media post today, Star Communications reminded residents of the importance of calling officials before starting property projects.

The post stated, “Remember to call 811 before you dig! With many people starting projects around their properties in the spring weather, always plan ahead with safety in mind…including locating utility lines. By dialing 811, the center will inform utility operators in your area that they need to mark any buried utility lines on your property with paint or flags, keeping you safe and protecting the local lines for everyone’s continued use. Call 811 Before You Dig

The call center is open 24 hours a day. The 811 In Your State website says property owners should call within three to 12 full working days before the dig. Marks are valid up to 15 working days which is defined as the period of time the facility marks (paint, flags, stakes, etc.) are valid according to state law or practice.

Citizens may also call 811 or 1-800-632-4949 to explore damage prevention information, local contacts, and rules for safe digging in North Carolina.
