I remember as a youngster, we (our family) worked hard. We were sharecroppers … meaning you worked hard for the landowner and shared what was generated in the form of cash at the end of the season, after all the bills were paid. My dad promised a trip to the beach, a weekend, if we worked hard and had any money left … Not much available after the bills were paid … but several years we headed to Ocean Drive, now North Myrtle Beach … always in late September or early October. Seemed we always made the trip on a cool weekend … That was OK … we had a great time, despite the weather … Remember, I was 13 and met a pretty, nice 13 year old female … never knew her name but I decided I liked girls … We played in the water, talked, departed never to be seen again…
