The first is a Special Meeting set for 12 noon Monday to discuss Personnel issues.
The second meeting is their regular monthly meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Several big dollar issues are on the agenda, including several documents related to the financing of the proposed new Detention and Law Enforcement project. A letter of compliance from USDA Rural Development related to a loan, not to exceed $19,985,000, has been received and begins the process of securing financing for the facility.
Included in the paperwork is the cost of each phase of the process. The Detention Center and Law Enforcement Center will be built on approximately 7.0 acres of county-owned land off Smith Circle Drive. The facility will be approximately 67,407 square feet that will include 220 beds that could be expanded up to 250. The total project cost, according to the loan agreement, would be just over $20 million.
On the agenda is a request from Bladen County schools totaling $200,000. Dr. Robert Taylor, Superintendent of Schools is requesting $80,000 for the Driver’s Education program, $40,000 for teacher supplies and materials and $80,000 to keep teacher supplements at the same level. Funding for some programs are likely to be cut in the state budget, when it is finally approved.
Bladen Community College has received approval of an application for the construction of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) building. The cost of the building is expected to be in the range of $1,860,000 and EDA funding is available in the range of $1.3 million. The Board will be asked to support the project.
Other action includes the approval and presentation of a Proclamation in honor of Mrs. Blannie Smith Hall’s 100th birthday.
A Public Hearing will be held related to a rezoning request for a parcel of land located on US 701 N, near Merritt’s Pottery. Dollar General reportedly is interested in building a store on the property.
Commissioners have a long agenda for the Monday meeting.
The regular monthly meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Commissioners Meeting Room in the Bladen County Courthouse and is open to the public.
