“Today in the town of David, a Savior has been born unto you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” -Luke 2:11.

The Messiah, also known as Jesus Christ, is designated the savior and king, the descendant of David, promised by the prophets to the Hebrew people, redeemer of sins, and the one envoy of God to save humanity.

The term Messiah has approached our dialect across multiple languages. In the first place, the word Messiah proceeded from the Hebrew expression, “Mashiach.” Additionally, the Latin phrase “Messias” was also early employed to distinguish the Messiah. In its literal translation to English, the word Messiah refers to “the one anointed;” most specifically, the one anointed in oil. For ancient Jewish customs, pouring or “anointing” oil on a person’s head was a common practice meant to consecrate a new king. Nevertheless, the Messiah stood out from regular kings. For this reason, his name, Jesus the Messiah, was given as the only chosen anointed one.

According to the sacred writings, the Messiah is the son of God, conceived by the holy spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. Moreover, the Messiah is believed to be the promised deliverer of the Jewish nation, leader of humanity, and redeemer of sins. The story of this king begins with his coming to the world centuries back in Bethlehem. The birth of the Messiah was quite a significant occasion for humanity. Thus the celebration of Christ or Jesus the Messiah has endured throughout time, and it is still commemorated today, especially during these dates. The so-called Christmas or holiday season observes the appearance of Christ in our lives in a particular way. Millions of people around the globe gather together to share and recognize God’s message brought into the world by the Messiah, Jesus.
