Bonhomie is the quality that distinguishes kind and friendly people. This attribute goes beyond simple graciousness; bonhomie denotes thoughtful and considerate personalities.
The term bonhomie is currently used as a noun. It is derivated from the french word Bonhomme, which stands for bon- (good) and -homme (man). The word bonhomie was coined as a synonym of kindness around the XVIII century. Regardless, the term has embraced other meanings, such as grower and farmer. In essence, bonhomie signifies “the virtue of being a good fellow.” Some similar concepts for this term are geniality, friendliness, happiness, good humor, warmness, and solidarity. Bonhomie is a word employed to point out an attribute; however, it doesn’t enclose a verb structure. That is, this term cannot indicate an explicit action.
People who demonstrate this feature are known as bonhemians. These people stand out for their great empathy and simplicity in most cases. Moreover, people with bonhomie characteristics tend to manifest happiness and highlight positive thoughts. Nowadays, it is common to use the word bonhomie as a compliment. Here are some examples:
- Your bonhomie will take you to incredible places.
- The bonhomie in your heart is immense.
- My friend’s bonhomie inspired me to continue reaching my goals.
- A good leader stands out for his tenacity, audacity, and bonhomie.
Some people consider that bonhomie may lead to naivety. However, being a bonhomian is a rewarding practice. From bonhomie, other values are derived, such as respect, understanding, benevolence, compassion, and kindness. Many people are credited with this feature due to their tendency to help and do good.

El término bonhomie se utiliza actualmente como sustantivo. Se deriva de la palabra en francés Bonhomme, que significa bon- (bueno) y -homme (hombre). La palabra bonhomie se acuñó como sinónimo de bondad alrededor del siglo XVIII. Independientemente, el término ha adoptado otros significados, como agricultor y labrador. En esencia, bonhomie significa “la virtud de ser un buen compañero”. Algunos conceptos similares para este término son genialidad, simpatía, alegría, buen humor, calidez, solidaridad. Bonhomie es una palabra empleada para señalar un atributo; sin embargo, no encierra una estructura verbal. Es decir, este término no puede indicar una acción explícita.
Las personas que demuestran esta característica se conocen como bonhemians. Estas personas destacan por su gran empatía y sencillez en la mayoría de los casos. Además, las personas con características de bonhomía tienden a manifestar felicidad y a resaltar pensamientos positivos. Hoy en día, es común usar la palabra bonhomie como un cumplido.
