Tax time, some have already filed … some paid, some rebates … Just thinking about all the $s that are flowing into the county in one form or another, mostly funded by the federal government … No doubt a ton of money … in addition to what the state and locals pay…
Began to think about how many federal dollars have been spent in Bladen County, annually over the past few years … Among the most recent big expenditures were the FEMA funds spent to restore the Elizabethtown City Cemetery … and it was needed after the storm of 2018. No idea of the total charges, but some original numbers I saw were in the $5.2 million range. Now, complete or nearing completion and it looks good. Saw it yesterday…
Nearby the US 701 construction over the Cape Fear River has cost a ton of money, and more to be spent … some of the original numbers I recall were over $23 million, would be surprised if those numbers have not risen substantially … everything else has ‘gone up’ and lest we forget, the bridge is a must…
Over the past few years, 2 other new bridges were built in the county, one near Tar Heel and in the eastern part of the county, both needed, and in both instances, a ton of money … mostly federal, but probably some state.
Get the picture, and there are more federal dollars annually coming to Bladen County farming operations … one of the last numbers I saw was over $73 million for the top 20 farming participants over the 1995-2021 time period … not to mention subsidies for individuals and families in need … on the welfare system … Any time we need more, we tend to turn to Uncle Sam … and to a lesser degree, the state…
Something to ponder on a Monday in Bladen County, North Carolina…
“Taking money in taxes and paying it straight back in subsidies is wrong.” Sabastian Kurz
“Giving subsidies is a two-edged sword. Once you give it, it’s very hard to take away subsidies. There’s a political cost to taking away subsidies.” Najib Razak
“I am a free-market Republican. I am against subsidies, in most cases.” Rudy Giuliani
