Robert Hester, Founder of BladenOnline.comRemember school days and warm, sometime hot spring days, no air conditioning? None at home, maybe a fan?

Remember WECT personalities, Bob West, the ESSO Reporter? How about Ben McDonald, a colorful individual?

Remember when there was a TV station in Fayetteville? Last one I could locate was a UHF station, channel 36, virtual channel 62 … Established in the mid 80s. UHF stations, if memory is correct, were low power stations. Never remember seeing it in our area…

Just thinking out loud…

Years ago, ’bout this time of year I enjoyed little league baseball … some relationships established then as coach/players carry on today … Great memories … Still going on today in many communities…

Remember the Jaycees, and many other civic clubs … down to a handful … Everyone is just so busy?

Ever think of ‘what you wanted to do when you grew up’, I wanted to be a DJ at a radio station. Finally achieved, discovered it was fun, but in the 50s and 60s, difficult to make grocery money … gas money, any kind of money.

I think of all the ways we are alerted when ‘bad weather’ was approaching … In 1954, when Hurricane Hazel arrived, no weather alerts, none. It was a mess … Sent home on a school bus in the storm … not complaining, just the facts…

While on the topic of weather … An 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms today, mainly before noon. High near 82. Windy with gusts as high as 26 mph. Mostly clear tonight, with a low around 49 and windy. Sunny Friday, with a high near 70 and more wind.

Remember these one-liners from years ago…

“Once we had Clinton, Johnny Cash and Bob Hope. Now we have Bush, no Cash and no Hope.”

“Learn from our parents’ mistakes; use birth control.”

“Seven days without laughter makes one weak.” Mort Walker
