The Chemours Company will hold two public information sessions on plans to expand its manufacturing capabilities at the Fayetteville Works site in Bladen County, the company announced Tuesday.

The first session will be held 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20 in the Bladen Community College Auditorium. The second session will be held 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at the Leland Cultural Arts Center.

Area residents will have the opportunity to learn more about the company and the planned expansion of existing facilities to support an increase in domestic production in the semiconductor, transportation, clean energy, consumer electronics, and communications industries. Residents will also receive information on Chemours’ design plans for emissions controls that will allow for increases in manufacturing without projected increases in the overall fluorinated organic compounds or greenhouse gases emitted from the site.

To date, Chemours has reduced air emissions of fluorinated organic compounds by more than 99% and reduced PFAS emissions to the Cape Fear River by 97%, the company said in a news release.

The Chemours Fayetteville facility produces materials critical to economic growth in industries across North Carolina and the United States. The recent signing of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 into law seeks to boost domestic research and production of semiconductors as a means of improving the U.S. supply chain and national security.

Chemours is the only U.S. producer of PFA, a fluoropolymer used in the manufacturing process for the production of semiconductors, and the Fayetteville Works site plays an integral role in the PFA supply chain. The Chemours Fayetteville Works site is the only U.S. manufacturing location for specialized ionomer membranes used in water electrolysis for the production of green (renewable) hydrogen, a clean fuel that can be used to power industry and transportation with no carbon emissions.

Boosting scalable domestic production of clean energy from sources like green hydrogen is central to the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which was recently approved by Congress.

According to Dawn Hughes, Fayetteville Works Plant Manager, “The upcoming information sessions will provide the opportunity for us to meet with community members, discuss our plans, gather input, and create greater understanding of how this investment will positively impact the local economy and North Carolina’s manufacturing industry.”

She added, “This state is already attracting a significant number of businesses in the industries we support, and Chemours’ Fayetteville Works products are critical to their supply chains. We’re proud of the role we play in supporting national priorities and creating jobs in North Carolina, and we’re eager to explain the plans for our future with our neighbors.”
