Center Javant McDowell posted a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead Clarkton School of Discovery to a 33-31 Bladen Five Middle School Conference boys basketball victory over visiting Elizabethtown Thursday night.

The Blue Devils improve to 4-0 with the victory and take sole possession of first place in the league. Elizabethtown is now 3-1.

Elizabethtown’s Majuan McKoy drilled in a 12-footer and flipped in a floater as the Cougars pulled to within 4 points in the fourth quarter. McDowell put back a rebound, hit a free throw and turned a Tashuan Berkeley pass into a lay-up and a 30-23 lead with 4:00 left to play.

Majuan McKoy banked in a long 3-pointer, and guard JaQuez McKoy popped in a baseline 8-footer to pull the Cougars to within 30-28 with 1:46 remaining.

After a time-out, McDowell worked free inside for a lay-up, and teammate Xavier McKoy canned a free throw for a 33-28 CSD lead.

JaQuez McKoy nailed a 3-pointer from the right corner to slice the Blue Devil lead to 33-31 with 37 seconds on the clock, but the final two Cougar possessions came up empty.

Berkeley pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds as the Blue Devils controlled the backboards by a 49-33 margin. Lawson Hester finished with 6 points and 7 rebounds, and Xavier McKoy contributed 5 points and 7 rebounds.

Majuan McKoy led the Cougars with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Teammate Jordan Robinson racked up 9 points and 8 rebounds before fouling out with 4:37 left. JaQuez McKoy added 5 points, and Allen Owens grabbed 5 rebounds.

McDowell scored on a pair of follow shots, Berkeley tossed in a floater and Hester hit 2 free throws as the Blue Devils went up 8-4 in the opening quarter. Lay-ups by Majuan McKoy and Robinson accounted for the Cougar points.

McDowell connected from 12 feet and made a free throw, Hester tossed in a floater, and Xavier McKoy connected from 8 feet as Clarkton maintained a 15-11 halftime lead.

Majuan McKoy banked in a 10-footer and sank 2 free throws, and Robinson bombed in a 3-point shot to keep the Cougars within 4 points at halftime.

McDowell started the second half with a pair of lay-ups, and Hester put back a rebound for a 21-11 Blue Devil lead.

Owens knocked down 2 free throws, but guard Garrett Melvin banked in a 12-footer to keep CSD up 23-13. Robinson made 2 free throws, and Majuan McKoy scored on a follow and on a short jumper from the lane to close the gap to 25-19 at the third quarter break.

The Cougars travel to Tar Heel next Thursday, while Clarkton is idle next week.
