Kendall Johnson sank the winning free throw with 3 seconds left to play as Tar Heel rallied for a 25-24 Bladen Five Middle School Conference boys basketball victory at East Arcadia Thursday.
East Arcadia had led 24-22, but Tar Heel’s Tyre Boykin stole an in-bounds pass, was fouled and made two free throws to tie the game with 12 seconds left to play.
Johnson then stole the ball and raced for a possible winning lay-up, but was fouled and nailed the second free throw to give the visitors the win.
Boykin tossed in 6 of his game-high 10 points in the first half as Tar Heel built 14-11 lead. Teammate Jadicus Register and Shemaiah Leak tallied 4 points each in the first half. Leak finished the game with 6 points.
Charles Brown drained a pair of 3-point shots and a free throw for East Arcadia in the first half. Sterling Thomas added another basket.
Kasey Price pumped in 2 baskets and 4 free throws to spark a 13-8 East Arcadia second half rally. Charles Dixon contributed 2 baskets and free throw to the East Arcadia surge.
Boykin, Leak, Johnson and Kasheem Henry threw in baskets to keep Tar Heel close. Leak finished with 6 points for the winners.
Price topped the East Arcadia scoring with 9 points, and Brown followed with 7 points. Dixon totaled 6 points in the game.
Tar Heel, now 1-3 on the season, will host Elizabethtown next Thursday. East Arcadia will entertain Bladenboro next Thursday.
