Abbey WaltersBladenboro native Abbey Walters pitched a complete game 4-hitter and beat No. 7 Catawba 6-2 Friday night at the Mid-South Classic in Spartanburg, SC.

It was the first start of the season for Walters who notched her first win as a Lady Brave and lowered her Earned Run Average to a team-best 2.33. She only needed 96 pitches in the game and retired the side in order in innings two thru five.

It was the first loss of the season for Catawba, now 10-1.

Saturday Walters batted 2-4 in the Lady Braves 4-3 loss to Lincoln Memorial. In the first inning Walters hammered a double to rightfield to drive in Whitney Jackson as UNC-Pembroke grabbed a 2-0 lead.

Walters beat out an infield hit in the fifth inning.

In UNC-Pembroke’s second game Saturday, the Lady Braves dropped their final game in the Mid-South Classic 5-4 to Southern Indiana. Walters batted 2-4 with 2 runs-batted-in and a run scored.

Walters smacked a single to right-center in the third inning. The West Bladen grad ripped a 2-run double down the left field line in the fifth inning that scored Jackson and Jamie Johnson. Walters dashed home on Taylor Gerhart’s single with the final run of the game.

The junior righthander started in the circle against Southern but was touched for 5 runs – 4 earned – in 2.1 innings and suffered her first loss of the season.

Walters still leads the Lady Braves in batting average (.412), hits (21), doubles (8) and slugging percentage (.569).
