Morgan SweeneyBladenboro native Morgan Sweeney batted 3-4 Saturday as her Newberry Lady Wolves split a double-header with visiting Mt. Olive.

Sweeney batted 2-2 with a run scored in the opener as the Newberry claimed a 2-1 victory. The West Bladen grad ripped a single through the left side in the first inning but was retired on a fielder’s choice.

Sweeney raked another single to left in third inning, moved up on a fielder’s choice and raced home on Ann Dee Priest’s single with the second run of the inning.

Mt. Olive won the nightcap 6-5, but Sweeney belted a single to right-centerfield in the Lady Wolves 4-run first inning. The freshman secondbaseman sprinted home with the second run of the inning on Maude McCourry’s single.

Sweeney is currently batting .325 with 13 hits, 9 runs scored, 5 runs batted in and 2 doubles. Her slugging percentage is .375. Newberry is now 10-6 on the season and will travel to Erskine Wednesday for a 1 p.m. double-header.
