MemorialDay StormFolks are keeping a wary eye towards the tropics as the Memorial Day weekend approaches.  National Weather Service Meteorologist Timothy Armstrong said that a low pressure system is approaching from the southeast and has about a 90 percent chance of becoming a tropical or subtropical storm either later Friday or on Saturday.

“The biggest impact for our area should be localized heavy rainfall beginning Saturday,” said Armstrong.

He explained a sub-tropical system is a low pressure system that derives its strength from both tropical and non-tropical influences.

“They lack warm temperatures aloft and typically have their most significant winds located far away from the center.  Last year’s tropical storm Ana began as a subtropical cyclone before transitioning to fully tropical before landfall,” said Armstrong.

He said that environmental conditions are generally favorable for the system to strengthen and develop further today (Friday) or Saturday as system continues to move west-northwest to northwest towards the southeastern United States.

Folks with interests along the southeastern United States should keep an eye on the this system and stay tuned to their local media outlets for more information.
