Town of White LakeOfficials with the town of White Lake are hard at work planning for a multi-use pathway at the lake.

White Lake Planning Board member Hope Campbell said that for many years, the town of White Lake and interested citizens have had a vision to provide a safe, attractive multi-use pathway to loop around the lake.  A multi-use path (MUP) is a path for pedestrians and bike traffic that is completely separate from motorized vehicle traffic.

Campbell said  town officials and staff from White Lake and Elizabethtown, working together with citizens, applied for a NC Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant to help fund a portion of the loop along Highways 53 and 701 where the speed limit is 55 mph. Currently, walkers, joggers and bikers are in close proximity to high speed traffic in these areas and the MUP will provide a much safer path for these activities.

We have sought funding for this portion of the loop for several years and are delighted that during the NCPARTF meeting on August 25, 2016, our project was funded!” said Campbell in a written statement.

She continued, most days, particularly during the warm season, you see many people out enjoying the sidewalk along Highway 53 and White Lake Drive, exercising and moving about.  With continuing mutual cooperation and perseverance, we can complete the loop around the lake so residents and visitors can safely exercise and appreciate the natural beauty around White Lake.

“We owe special thanks to the Keith family, for graciously providing access to the perimeter of their property,” said Campbell.
