DUBLIN – Midway overcame an early 16-0 West Bladen lead then held on for a 33-30 Four County Conference jayvee football victory Thursday night.

Freshman Da’Shawn Hines returned the opening kick-off for a Knight touchdown then carried into the end zone for a 2-point conversion and an 8-0 lead.

Midway fumbled the ensuing kick-off back to West Bladen, and the Knights capitalized with another touchdown. Hines capped the drive with a touchdown run, and Nyjae Tate ran the 2-point conversion for a 16-0 lead.

The Raiders regrouped and scored the final 19 points of the half to go up 19-16 at intermission. Midway stretched the lead to 25-16, before Hines scored his third touchdown of the game on a run that trimmed the margin to 25-22.

After Midway upped the count to 33-22, sophmore Kerron Washington trimmed the lead to 33-28 with a touchdown run, and Hines tacked on the 2-point conversion run to close the gap to 33-30.

“I was extremely proud of our players tonight,” said West Bladen Coach Kris Williams. “They left everything on the field. We won everywhere but the scoreboard. A pair of turnovers and a few untimely penalties hurt, but we controlled the controllables. I truly believe if we’d had a minute or two more with the ball at the end, we could have taken the scoreboard as well.”

The Knight jayvees, now 3-5 on the season, will travel to rival East Bladen Thursday night.
