The increased traffic that traditionally occurs during the Thanksgiving holiday means that drivers must be more alert when traveling. We reached out to Bladen County Sheriff, Jim McVicker, for some safety tips for motorists this holiday season.

Following are 10 tips to help you stay safe during the holidays or anytime you travel.

1. Check your car is in proper working order. Make sure your tires, oil and lights are all as they should be before driving off to your destination.  Replenish fuel prior to reaching ¼ tank and carry a breakdown kit/first aid kit.

2. Buckle up.

3. Don’t speed. There are roads that were washed out during the hurricane in October. Plan your route before leaving for your destination. Prior to traveling, obtain a map or download the latest available GPS data. “Be patient and take your time,” McVicker said.

4. Be aware of your surroundings. Keep safety in mind at all times.

5. Have a fully charged mobile telephone with you at all times and vehicle charger for extended travel distance.

6. Keep your vehicle doors locked and windows rolled up.

7. If you experience a breakdown, pull as far onto the shoulder as possible and activate your emergency flashers. Immediately summons assistance from a reputable source and/or call for law enforcement response. If a stranger stops, speak to them through a partially rolled-down window and do not exit your vehicle until a law enforcement officer or tow truck operator arrives.

8. Devote your full time and attention to driving! If you feel yourself getting tired, pull over and take a break at a safe location.

9. “Of coarse, don’t drink and drive!”, McVicker stated.

10. …. And don’t text and drive!
