CLARKTON –Clarkton School of Discovery built a 24-12 lead then withstood a second-half Bladenboro rally to post a 37-34 Bladen Five Middle School Conference boys basketball victory over the Bulldogs.
Cornelius McArthur nailed a 3-point shot and a 2-point basket to lead the Blue Devils to a 10-4 first quarter lead. Teammates Garrett Melvin and Donevin Keith tossed in a basket each, and Jacob Priest tacked on a free throw.
Donovan Stone sank 3 free throws, and Shy’Ron Adams made one for the Bulldog points.
Melvin fired in a trio of baskets in the second period, and Priest drained a 3-point shot. Center J. T. Junious and Malachi Oxendine threw in a basket each, and Jake Garrison canned a free throw as the Blue Devil lead grew to 24-12 at halftime.
Adams pumped in 2 baskets and a free throw in the second quarter for Bladenboro. Teammate Bryley Williams popped in a basket, and Andrew Pait hit a free throw.
Adams burnt the nets with 5 baskets in the third quarter as the Bulldogs trimmed their deficit to 33-24. Williams connected for another basket in the period.
Junious delivered a basket and 3 free throws for Clarkton in the quarter, and Melvin popped in a basket. Garrison and McArthur hit a free throw each in the period.
Adams drilled a 3-point shot and tallied a 2-point basket and 2 free throws in the final period to lead a 10-4 Bulldog closing spurt. Teammate Joshua Lewis made 2 free throws, and Stone hit one.
Junious and McArthur kept the Blue Devils on top by scoring a basket each in the fourth quarter. Melvin topped the balanced Clarkton scoring with 10 points. Junious followed with 9 points, and McArthur finished with 8 points. Priest scored 4 points.
Adams poured in a game-high 23 points for the Bulldogs. Williams and Stone finished with 4 points each.
The Blue Devils improved to 3-0 and will travel to undefeated Elizabethtown Thursday. Bladenboro is now 1-2 and will visit East Arcadia Thursday.
