Ms. Bessie Barnes, former Miss UNC- Pembroke, spoke to the Elizabethtown Middle School Girls with P.EA.R.L.S. about respect said Dr. Renee Steele, organizer of the program. Barnes told the girls that it is important to respect others but it starts with loving themselves. Barnes talked about her childhood experiences which left her feeling self-conscious.
She shared with them how she began the process of truly loving herself and being comfortable in her own skin. She concluded her message by telling the girls that she intentionally did not wear make-up for the presentation to them.
Barnes said, “I wanted to demonstrate that beauty and confidence comes from within”. She further stated if they focus on loving themselves, their inner beauty will manifest outwardly.
