First Flight travels down from Kill Devil Hills to West Bladen for what should be an exciting shoot-out in the opening round of the NCHSAA Class 2A Boys State Play-offs Tuesday night. Gametime is 7 p.m.

Coach Chad Williams’ Nighthawks are familiar with the ‘Castle’ winning 2 of their 3 games in the Woodmen Life Christmas Tournament at West Bladen and were the talk of the tournament with their high-scoring offense that was popularized by the Loyola Marymount teams of Paul Westhead that featured Bo Kimble and the late Hank Geathers.

The Nighthawks average 79 points per game and have made 325 of 1167 three-point shots. Freshman Dylan Blake is the most accurate of the Nighthawks making 103 of 316 3-pointers and averages 16 points per game.

Senior Devyn Dodson follows with a 15.5 scoring average and 7.4 rebound average.  Senior Tyler High adds 15 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Six-five, 260-pound senior Cole Basnight contributes 8.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Sophmore Reece Jones scores 9.2 ppg and senior guard John King distributes 7.1 assists per game.

The Nighthawks finished third in the Northeastern Coastal 2A behind Hertford County and Elizabeth City Northeastern. First Flight lost 3 times to Northeastern, twice to Hertford and Bertie and one time each to Whiteville and Currituck County.

Coach Travis Pait’s Knights dropped their first two games of the season then reeled off 13 wins in a row and captured the championship of the Woodmen Life Tournament with wins over North Brunswick, Whiteville, and Dillon, SC.

The Knights dropped 7 of their last 11 games, but four of those losses were by a total of 7 points. The Knights finished third in the Four County 2A/1A behind Clinton and Wallace-Rose Hill.

The Knights average 56 points per game but only give up 51 ppg. Senior Sayaun Dent scores 17.9 points per game, and 6-8 senior John Bowen contributes 16.4 ppg. Senior point guard Kalvin Page adds 8.3 ppg, and junior forward Jonathan Robinson scores 5 ppg.
